Mahale National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park is a densely forested mountain area rising from Lake Tanganyika, renowned for its chimpanzee refuge. Located on the western part of the island, the park hosts around 14 primate species, including leopards, blue duikers, and red-tailed monkeys, along with a variety of Rift Valley bird species unique to Tanzania. Access to the park is limited to walking and rowing along the shoreline. Key attractions include observing wild chimps, trekking with primates, hiking, snorkeling, and bird watching. Ascending Mt. Nkungwe, the park’s tallest peak, requires an armed ranger and physical fitness, with a challenging two-day trail option available.
